Abstract

To establish reference interval for some renal profile parameters in healthy adult population of Ambalappuzha North Grama Panchayath. One point cross sectional study was done. Apparently healthy individuals of both sex aged between18-60 years who attended a health camp organised by Department of Biochemistry, Govt TD Medical college in association with the Ambalappuzha North Grama Panchayath were included in the study. Sample analysis was done in fully automated analyser. Median, central 95 percentile and 90 % confidence interval were calculated. The 97.5 percentile and 2.5 percentile formed the upper and lower reference limits of the population. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS Version 16. Reference Interval for urea was lower than standard reference limit (12.51 – 35.38 mg/dl). Reference Interval for uric acid (2.38-7.39 mg/dl in males,2.69-6.7 mg/dl in females) were much wider than established Reference interval in males; but in females, both lower limit and upper limit were slightly higher than standard Reference interval. No much wider difference was noted for creatinine Reference interval, but the lower Reference limit was slightly lower than standard Reference limit in both males and females. It was observed that there was a gradual increase of mean of urea and creatinine as the age advances. With this pilot study we can conclude that there exist differences in reference interval for various population and hence there is a need for population studies so that Reference range of individual parameters from the local area can be assigned in the lab which helps in better health care.
