Abstract

The leaf volatile oils of the British and American specimens of Tanacetum vulgare (tansy) and Commercial tansy oil were characterised on the basis of their terpene components. Analyses of the oils utilising a combination of gas liquid chromatography (GLC) and gas chromatograph — mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed the predominant monoterpene to be isothujone (66-81 %) and minor monoterpene components include sabinene (3-6 %) and α-terpinene (1-4 %). The sesquiterpene composition was relatively small (0.1-0.7 %). It consisted of caryophyllene and other sesquiterpene hydrocarbons which were tentatively identified as γ-cadinene, α-bergamotene and β-elemene. The biogenetic significance of the composition of the oils is briefly discussed.
