Contrasting to the first period of Modern Hebrew literature, when books by female authors were not privileged in the national cannon, books by women writers published in the 20th century final years became very popular. Part of this success is due tothe historical background adopted by sevéral books of that period. This paper deals with two novels of the period: Shulamit Lapid's book has a woman in the beginning of the 19thcentury colonization period as its heroine while Shifra Horn's book, dealing with the sameapproximately, has several female characters whose names and features remind biblical matriarchs.
