Abstract

Erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) levels were measured in fetally malnourished infants at birth. These values were significantly lower than the levels found in normal newborn infants or the levels in depressed newborn infants with low Apgar scores who were not malnourished. Since acidosis is known to produce a slow fall in red cell 2,3-DPG concentration in newborn infants, these lowered levels in malnourished infants might be an expression of prolonged acidosis in utero.
