Abstract

ABSTRACT Erythema multiforme is an acute, immune-mediated, mucocutaneous disorder that is frequently associated with herpes simplex virus. This condition is subdivided into two classifications: erythema multiforme minor and erythema multiforme major. It is important to recognize that erythema multiforme major is its own entity and should not be confused for Stevens–Johnson syndrome. This review will discuss the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of erythema multiforme so that dermatology nurses and providers are better able to identify and manage this disease.
