Abstract
ABSTRACT Although Brooke Van Buuren’s career in pornography lasted only about six months, she has retained a certain degree of renown because of a short clip where she gagged and coughed out semen that she was attempting to swallow. This article provides an interpretation of her influence in creating what can be termed ‘failure porn’, a sub-genre of pornography where failure of a routine act by a porn star is eroticized by spectators. The data for the article consist of discussion board posts by Brooke Van Buuren and her fans, her own blog, and comments she made in response to interview questions within the context of her gonzo-style videos. I examine how this vivid failure serves as a flash point for discussions of her calibre as a porn star, which, in turn, inspires a more general commentary about cultural expectations for female porn stars.
