Abstract

The paper explores the symptoms of eros in the Greek Magical Papyri and the comparative defixiones. I examine whether eros is described as a disease to be inflicted on the erotic victim, looking at the bodily and psychological symptoms of the erotic passion as described in the erotic and separation spells. Another issue I am looking at is whether the spell is used as a torture and punishment to the eros victim. If so, how can the notions of torture and punishment be understood in relation to the intensions of the user and the aim of the erotic spell? Finally, I am arguing that the spells in these fictional erotic unions functioned as a way of reflecting the symptoms of eros from the user to the victim of the spell. Possible mystical allusions of the spells are also considered.
