Abstract

The biggest tragedy of the century was on 26 February 1992. It was the Khojali genocide. This large city was destroyed by the Armenians, and hundreds of innocent people were killed. The Armenians together with the Russian continued the same massacre of 1905–1918 in Khojali. Khojali is an important settlement centre of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno - Karabakh. Khojali is situated on the roads of Agdam, Shusha, Hankendi, Askeran and is strategically important for Karabakh. Khojali is not only a region but also is the place where Turkish history and culture originates. The population before the massacre was more than 7 thousand. In some resources, the population is known to be 10 thousand. Together with Azerbaijanian turks, Meskhetian turks also lived here. The armenians’ actions in Khojali cannot be explained through normal war conditions. Because, it was a genocide against Muslim Turks. Indeed, exorbitant Armenian nationalists confess that it was the revenge of 1915 and all this hatred was according to plan during the Soviet period. The Khojali Genocide is the mass killing of Azerbaijanians living in Khojali which is situated in Azerbaijan’s mountainous region by Russians, Armenians and Armenia on 26 February 1992 during the Karabakh war.
