Abstract

Shame is playing an important role in personal relationships and in the development of self-consciousness of a person. Already 1925, Victor von Weizsacker stated that the feeling of shame contributes to the construction of an “inner room” but, at the same time, also integrates a person in a social community. Shame is a border experience, a kind of “tearing the coherence” (von Weizsacker). Shame may contribute to the development of subjectivity but also hinder it, if the abashment happens continuously. This topic gets illustrated and deepened by an example and references.
