Abstract

Ergasilus cyprinaceus sp. n. is described from cyprinid fishes from a tributary of the Talla- poosa River System, Alabama. Notropis baileyi Suttkus and Raney was found to be infested on every collection date and was designated type host, but the parasite was observed to occasionally infest five additional species of cyprinids. A definite pathology of the gills was observed. Attempts to rear E. cyprinaceus from eggs were unsuccessful. Egg sac formation was observed to take place in the field at 62 F. E. cyprinaceus appears to be most closely related to the E. caeruleus group. It lacks teeth on the second antennae, however, and has a large inflated portion projecting posteriorly from the second segment of the second antennae.
