Abstract

Notropis gibbsi, a new cyprinid fish, is described from the Tallapoosa River system in Alabama and Georgia. It is known only from the drainage area above the Fall Line. It is compared to its nearest known relative, Notropis trichroistius (Jordan and Gilbert), from which it is geographically isolated. N. trichroistius is known from the Coosa, Cahaba, Alabama, and Black Warrior River systems. The species differ strikingly in details of tuberculation of nuptial males, snout shape, and morphology of the preorbital bone. N. gibbsi is further distinctive as it is the only member of the subgenus Cyprinella with head tubercles best developed on the ventral surface.
