Abstract

The equation of state and the elastic constants of solids at T = 0 K at negative pressures have been considered by the example of alkali metals. The calculations for Na, K, Rb, and Cs have been performed using the pseudopotential model. The “ideal” tensile strength of these metals is evaluated. The second-and third-order elastic constants are calculated at different pressures, and the mechanical stability of the crystal lattice of alkali metals is analyzed at negative pressures up to the spinodal curve.
