Abstract
Shock compression of low-density silica aerogels reveals a rate process associated with the crushing dynamics of the aerogel structure. Embedded magnetic impulse velocity gauge (MIV) experiments have been accomplished on density 0.3 and 0.12 g/cm3 materials. The crushing rate has been determined for the low pressure (~ 0.1 to 0.2 GPa) regime, and equation of state (EOS) data have been acquired. The crushing rate increases with applied pressure in this low pressure region.
