Abstract
• EPR studies of VO 2+ ions in TMZ single crystals are done at room temperature. • EPR analysis indicates four magnetically equivalent VO 2+ sites. • The vanadyl ion is found to take up substitutional position. The principal g and A are determined. • The optical absorption study is also carried out. • By correlating EPR and optical data the nature of bonding in the crystal is discussed. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of VO 2+ ions in [N(CH 3 ) 4 ] 2 ZnCI 4 (TMZ) single crystals are done at room temperature. Four magnetically equivalent VO 2+ sites are observed from EPR analysis. VO 2+ ion substitutes at Zn 2+ site. The principal g and A tensors are determined from angular variation of the EPR spectra. The optical absorption study is also performed. Using EPR and optical data the nature of bonding in the crystal is discussed.
