Abstract

Am J Obstet Gynecol 2000;183(4):967–73 The concept of the vagina as a unique immunologic zone is currently being investigated as a number of new treatments may function in this special immunologic milieu. The normal vaginal epithelium and the epithelial immune cells were investigated during specific times in the menstrual cycle. A small change in the number of epithelial cell layers was seen during the menstrual cycle. This study has importance as a baseline for the understanding of vaginal epithelium. This study will, in turn, serve as the control with which to evaluate possible effects of medication on the vaginal epithelial layers and the immune cell populations. (LBT)
