Abstract

Numerous growth factors active in cultured cells have been identified and purified in recent years. However, only in a few cases has their relevance to an in vivo situation been explored. Among the growth factors shown to have a profound effect in vivo are the epidermal growth factor (EGF), which stimulates the proliferation of the basal cell layer of various epithelia in vivo, and nerve growth factor (NGF), which has a dramatic effect on the development of the sympathetic adrenergic system. In this short review I concentrate on what is known of their biological effects in vivo and in vitro, as well as on the role they could play in mammalian development.
