Abstract
This study was designed to determine the epidemiologic profile of the oral lesions in elderly Brazilian patients. Study Design: Clinical data and diagnoses of oral lesions from patients age 60 years or older were collected. The patients were evaluated at Oral Pathology Clinical, School of Dentistry, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil over the 21-year period from 1990 to 2011. The group consisted of 65.54% women and 40.08% were between ages 60 and 65 years. Results: From a total of 7295 charts evaluated, 1427 of the patients were elderly. Of these 237 had a diagnosis of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH), followed by 180 with a diagnosis of candidiasis, and 73 with a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusion: IFH was the oral lesion most commonly diagnosed in elderly patients. Changes in the oral cavity influence the overall health of the individual, especially those in the elderly population. Knowledge of these trends is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment CNPq #309209/2010-2; 472045/2011-3, FAPEMIG.
