Envisioning Nursing Profession Grounded on Advanced Nursing Education: A New Paradigm Change

Abstract

Envisioning is the process of visualization or imagination of future possibilities. The health care system is rapidly changing. Nurse’s roles, responsibilities, and hence, the education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and advancements in progressively complex health system. To build the future of nursing, we need to envision into a new paradigm in nursing education. Nurse educators must stay abreast of nursing issues and trends to keep up with the ever-changing nature of this profession. The various strategies that can be adopted to empower nursing education include need based curriculum revision, faculty development program, inter professional education, strengthening of educational institution, innovations in teachinglearning processes, education quality assurance, evidence based practice in education, utilization of technological advancements, uniformity and standardization of nursing program, preparation of global nurses, trans cultural nursing education, enhancement of career opportunity, higher education opportunities, short courses on specialized nursing and dual role of nursing educators by collaborating with nursing care providers. An amalgamation of all these strategies into unison may help us to accomplish our vision more rapidly. Effective and planned collaboration, innovative strategies and advocating the quality patient care along with professional advancements will help us to meet the critical issues faced by nursing today and in the future. Though nurse educators have a major role in building the future of nursing, it is responsibility of every nurse to have their thoughts, words and actions with a futuristic vision of the nursing profession.
