Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) as lubricant additives in polar oils have been receiving much attention, however, polymeric ionic liquids serving as lubricant additives in non-polar oils has rarely been investigated so far. Herein, an environmental-friendly poly(isobutylene)-based ionic liquid (PIBIL) has been designed. The PIBIL exhibited remarkably improved tribological properties in selected base oils as well as some engine oils. Importantly, a significant synergistic effect between the PIBIL and ZDDP was found effectively enhancing anti-wear properties of oils. The tremendous decrease of WSD(Wear Scar Diameter) for synergistic binary additive was attributed to the hybrid film formed by PIBIL and ZDDP. This study reveals the potentiality of task-specific poly(isobutylene)-based ionic liquid as anti-wear additive for diversified tribological applications.
