Abstract

This paper describes an isothermal calorimeter which was used for measuring the heat of formation of potassium graphite, C 8K. The observed heat of reaction was −84.1 ± 0.3 cal/gC using pure hexagonal graphite, but −88.1 ±1.1 cal/gC using graphite containing 33 per cent rhombohedral modification. From these results one calculates that 0.14 ± 0.04 kcal/g-atom is liberated upon transition of rhombohedral into hexagonal graphite. Only by mechanical treatment, such as grinding, can the rhombohedral modification be obtained. Estimation of the energy stored in the lattice defects produced by grinding leads to values significantly lower than those measured.
