Abstract

Dame Margery Perham, acclaimed as the foremost academic expert on British colonial administration, also gained much experience and showed much interest in its French counterpart. Her thoughts on this, however, were never published in her lifetime. This article, based her diaries (published posthumously under the editorship of the article's author) and other previously little-known material, reconstructs her views on French colonial rule and how she felt the two colonial services compared with one another. It also summarises the author's own perspectives on the latter issue.
