Abstract

Abstract Dow Corning's Process Engineering Department has maintained an excellent safety record: 28 years of operation with no lost time injuries. The bulk of the work conducted in this department involves the design, construction and operation of pilot plants. The type and extent of safety reviews employed changes with increasing pilot plant complexity and increased hazards associated with the chemicals processed. This paper reviews Dow Corning's approach to pilot plants, discusses the type of reviews used on different pilot plants and presents specific safety improvements suggested by hazard evaluation teams.
