Abstract

This text presents fundamental concepts within the framework of teaching and learning Portuguese as a second language (L2) or another L2. Throughout the text, basic concepts such as acquisition and learning, procedural or declarative processing, working memory or long-term memory are discussed. The purpose of bringing to light a set of foundations that support a psycholinguistic approach to language teaching is to contribute to the initial or ongoing training of practicing or aspiring teaches who are interested in the processes that help explain difficulties and breakthroughs in the L2 learning process. It calls for an exploratory and inquisitive attitude on the part of these teachers.
