Abstract

ABSTRACT Regional planners are actively engaged in the search for suitable commercial partners to enhance the economic position of the region while minimizing the adverse effects on quality of life which are possible as a result of commercial development. The authors propose the use of a 4 step regional planning model which incorporates the Commercial Strategy Assessment (CSA) matrix. The CSA matrix can aid regional planners in (1) assessing the economic contribution of individual members of the existing commercial base of the area, (2) identifying strengths and weaknesses of the present commercial mix, and (3) guiding strategic efforts to develop a commercial mix which maximizes economic contribution and efficient resource utilization.
