Abstract

The superconducting magnet energy storage (SMES) system is a special and advanced technique studied for FACTS, flexible AC transmission systems. This paper provides an application of the SMES for solving the transient stability problem of a generator connected to a infinite power system. The controller of SMES is demanded to have stability ability by controlling SMES to provide appropriate energy at certain times. Artificial neural nets (ANNs), which have received more and more attention recently, are a better choice as the controller. A special controller is designed for modulating the SMES input signal. The structure and parameters of the proposed ANN controller are determined from a PID controller whose parameters are acquired by the pole assignment method. Computer simulations on the nonlinear power system model demonstrate the control effort of the proposed controller under disturbing conditions. The results are promising. >
