Abstract

Two types of energy storage devices, namely, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and battery energy storage system (BESS) are often considered in flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) applications. FACTS controllers are capable of improving voltage, small signal, and transient stability margins of the system, which may be further enhanced by the additional controllability due to an energy storage device. Modelling and data requirements of both SMES and BESS for power system stability simulations are discussed within the context of FACTS controllers utilizing both shunt-connected and series-connected voltage-sourced converters (VSC). Sample simulation results are presented.
