Abstract

1. 1. The transport of oxygen through porous membranes filled with a solution of sea lion myoglobin has been studied by tracer technique, using oxygen-18, and by volumetric technique. 2. 2. The “steady state” transfer of oxygen through membranes suspended between two chambers of equal oxygen pressure but different oxygen-18 concentrations was greatly accelerated by myoglobin, being up to some fifteen times higher than in the control metmyoglobin solution. 3. 3. The net transport of oxygen was similarly enhanced when the oxygen pressure on one side of the membrane was zero, but the effect was abolished by back pressures of oxygen. 4. 4. The effects is analogous to that found in hemoglobin solutions and may be of physiological significance for oxygen transport in myoglobin-containing tissues.
