Abstract

Two heterogeneous models are proposed for the theoretical study of oxygen transport in tissues. The first model is composed of alternating layers of cellular and extracellular materials in series. The second model is composed of these layers in parallel. For comparison, a modified model of heterogeneous tissue first suggested by Hills is also considered. Mathematical expressions for the ratio of extracellular permeability to cellular permeability are derived. Existing experimental data are applied to each of the models and the permeability ratio (Ke/Kc) is found to have an order of magnitude 10 based on the layered models and 103 based on the non-layered model. It is believed that true degree of heterogeneity is better represented by the value 10 than 103.
