Abstract

AbstractUnder the conditions of chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometry, protonated pyridine [PyrH]+ and partially methylated alditol acetates (PMAAs) form very stable adducts. The CI mass spectra exhibit, exclusively, peaks due to quasimolecular [M + PyrH]+ adduct ions. The methylation analysis of complex carbohydrates can be enhanced by using the pyridine CI mass spectra to complement electron impact mass spectra and gas chromatography data. As a result, the sensitivity as well as the accuracy of quantitative analysis of PMMA components is increased.
