Abstract

The effects of additions of BaSnO3 in combination with BaCeO3 on the microstructure, crystal growth and superconducting properties of melt-texturedYBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) have been investigated. It has been reported that the addition ofBaCeO3 toY123 results in an increase in the critical current density. However, higher cerium concentrationsaffect the solidification process and inhibit the growth of melt-textured Y123 single crystals.BaSnO3 has been shown to restore the properties of Y123 withBaCeO3 additives. Increasingthe amount of added BaSnO3 leads to refinement of Y211 particles, enhancement of crystal growthand an increase in critical current density. The relationship betweenmicrostructural development and superconducting properties of Y123 withBaCeO3 and BaSnO3 is discussed.
