Abstract

The third generation (3G) cellular system supports multimedia traffic with much larger system capacity than its predecessors. The wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) (J.K.F.O.E. Dahlman et al., 1998)-(T.O.R. Prasad, 1998) is one of the most prominent wireless communication techniques in 3G. To meet the certain quality of service (QoS) (D.W. Negi) requirements for various traffic types is a very challenging task. Radio resource management (RRM) (O. Gurbuz and H. Owen, 1999) in 3G addresses this issue by providing solutions to satisfy the QoS for various traffic types according to their QoS requirements (N. Dimitriou et al., 2000), while utilizing the system resource efficiently. In this paper, we propose the radio resource allocation and management schemes with scheduler in the WCDMA downlink. The numerical results show that our designs can guarantee a certain QoS level for different users according to their traffic conditions, and thus increase the system utilization
