Abstract

Abstract Surfactant technology is recognized as potential treatment method that can be used to enhance sludge dewatering process. This study was designed to investigate the potential of cationic plant-based esterquat (PBE) surfactant in removal of oil and enhance the dewatering of oily sludge. The effect of PBE concentration was investigated based on percentage of oil removal and weight loss of oily sludge. FTIR spectra confirms the loss of treated oily sludge transmission peak at 1636.11 cm-1 was due to the solubilization of oil into PBE surfactant solution. Results shows that the best condition for the percentage of oil removal and weight loss of oily sludge were 83.75% and 81.31%, respectively at PBE concentration of 100 mg/L. It was observed that the PBE surfactant was greatly enhanced the oily sludge dewatering process.
