Abstract

Engineering Mathematics is a comprehensive textbook for technological and vocational mathematics courses, and is also well designed for self-study objectives. John Bird's approach, based on numerous worked examples and problems, is intended for students of a wide range of abilities and interests. The emphasis is on problem-solving skills, keeping the theory to a minimum, for a thoroughly practical introduction to core mathematics needed for engineering studies and practice. The third edition has been reorganized to present a more logical introduction of the topics, including recent course specifications in the latest National and Vocational Certificate of Education syllabuses. In Engineering Mathematics, third edition, nine topic areas are covered: number and algebra, mensuration, trigonometry, graphs, vectors, complex numbers, statistics, differential calculus and integral calculus. Each of these areas has multiple chapters, each one starting with a simple outline of the essential definitions, formulae, laws and procedures. The theory is kept to a minimum, as problem solving is extensively used to establish and demonstrate the theory. The readers are thereby guided to solving similar problems by themselves. The book includes some 850 worked examples, 1500 problems (with answers provided), 100 multiple choice questions and 18 assessment papers. The style and content of this textbook are ideal for self-study in preparation for several types of examinations requiring mathematical problem-solving skills. The author also has other closely related textbooks, a Basic Engineering Mathematics, 2nd edition, and a Higher Engineering Mathematics, 3rd edition, as well as an Engineering Mathematics Interactive consisting of three interactive CD-ROMs, from the same publisher. Therefore, interested students and instructors would be well advised to examine the contents of these books carefully before deciding on one. J A Rod Blais
