Abstract

Engineering management has a unique opportunity to bring together a variety of disciplines (engineering, human factors and management) and sectors in society (government, industry and universities) to better serve mankind. The result of such a coalescence could be technical solutions, not just to technical problems, but also to the concomitant and important human problems of utilizing the solutions. An example of a possible role of engineering management in revitalization — in fostering greater productivity and efficiency — lies in the area of computer utilization. This paper will examine current solutions to the persistent language problem of making computers readily accessible for information retrieval by a broad spectrum of people. One solution, which suggests a possible revitalization role for engineering management, is the user-to-database design approach of a new database query language, called CAQL, which will be outlined.
