Abstract
SUMMARY A description is given of the existing educational structure in Brazil, dedicated to the training of engineers and engineering technologists. The effect of a postgraduation system conceived primarily for the preparation of teaching and research staff for the undergraduate engineering programmes is analyzed based on the effect it has had on the curricula structures. A few reflections and recommendations are presented on the objectives of undergraduate and post-graduate engineering education and on the professional dualism of engineering and engineering technology.
