Abstract
Chronic kidney disease is a complex entity with a major social and medical impact due to its evolution, prognosis and associated morbimortality. It affects patients’ quality of life and leads to a high level of medical spending. It is therefore of fundamental importance to unify and update concepts to ensure that this pathology is properly diagnosed and detected early, as well as to prevent risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and systemic diseases, among others). The factors which influence the progression of this entity should be closely monitored, making it possible to manage associated complications in a timely manner. These complications include anaemia, alterations in the acid-base balance and bone mineral metabolism, volume overload or uremic syndrome.
