Abstract

Human energy use is the extraction, collection, and conversion of energy into forms that humans can utilize. Our energy use directly alters biodiversity through land use and pollution. Indirectly, human energy use alters biodiversity through the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change and through other broad ecological impacts. Because human energy use is equivalent to the product of population, economic production per capita, and energy use per unit of economic production, each of these factors can exert an equivalent impact on biodiversity. Energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy can substantially reduce ecological impacts of human energy use.
