Abstract

New closed-form analytical expressions of the energy release rate of a bimaterial cracked specimen are derived, when it experiences pure mode I in an asymmetric double cantilever test, and pure mode II in an asymmetric end-notched flexure test. The analysis is based on the strain coenergy and on the laminated beam theory. The results of the analytical approach are compared with those obtained using the finite element method in two ways: by the virtual crack closure technique at a test point and by cohesive elements during a virtual delamination test. The agreement is excellent in both cases.
