Abstract

The technique of chronospectroscopy has been used to determine the rate constant for energy transfer from single ions to pairs in ruby. Because of the dependence of the rate on concentration, the exchange transfer processes are observable directly as postulated by several authors. The temperature dependence shows that transfer occurs by energy migration between single ions.
