Abstract

The energy loss of Ar and U ions in various target materials (6⩽ Z 2⩽92) has been measured in the energy range between 0.5 and 1.4 MeV/amu. Stopping cross sections of heavy ions show Z 2 oscillations similar to those found for α particles. In the case of U ions these still exist at an energy of 1.3 MeV/amu, whereas for Ar ions the oscillation at Z 2≈22 is completely washed out at this energy.
