Abstract
The matrix β-ThCl 4 which presents an incommensurate modulated structure at low temperature is doped with the lanthanide ion Pr 3+. The strong features in the absorption and the laser-excited fluorescence spectra have been interpreted as arising from levels of Pr 3+ in the site of D 2 d symmetry. In a least- squares fit calculation, the best parameters are determined.
