Abstract

Relative intensities for the production of γ-rays by inelastic neutron scattering from iron have been measured at 90° with 4.3 MeV and 5.3 MeV neutrons. The gamma radiations following the decay of 56Co to 56Fe have also been measured. In each case, the γ-rays were detected with a Ge(Li) spectrometer of about 30 cm 3 in volume. On the basis of these two measurements, a decay scheme was constructed which has a good measure of agreement with the level positions and spins obtained by McGrory in a shell-model calculation of the energy levels of 56Fe.
