Abstract

The primary goal of drip irrigation is to provide sufficient quantity of water and fertilizer to improve crop yield. An Efficient Scalable Data Collection Scheme (ESDCS) using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is designed to collect the sensor data from the agricultural field for predicting the amount of water required by the crop. In ESDCS, the waiting time based Cluster Head (CH) selection is proposed depending on the residual energy. Also, the utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) effectively collects the field sensor data over a wide area. The performance of the proposed ESDCS is tested in the sugarcane field for the automation of water irrigation and fertigation. The duration and amount of irrigation is calculated based on the crop evapotranspiration using crop co-efficient kc and daily weather condition. It is observed that the proposed system utilizes only 25.08% of the water as compared with the existing irrigation system.
