Abstract

Objective: The main intent of this research work is clustering of nodes in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) and selection of energy efficient Cluster Head to improve the network lifetime. Methods/Analysis: In this paper a clustering method is proposed which is based on entropy model. The cluster formation and Cluster Head selection is based on a weight factor computed using the battery power, mobility, connectivity factors of nodes. The cluster structure obtained from the clustering method is exploited to minimize the energy consumption with increase in the MANET size. Result: The cluster formation and Cluster Head selection method provides a better performance in terms of the network lifetime, energy efficiency and the Cluster Head selection reduces the single link failures. It outperforms the flooding in terms of energy consumption with the proposed strict 1 hop data sharing scheme. The proposed clustering can be adapted in mobile adhoc networks like military applications, disaster/ emergency management operations to ensure efficient data sharing.
