Abstract

A nanofluid with good energy dissipation property was fabricated by mixing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and a nonwetting high surface tension liquid. Surface treatment of MWCNTs with various organic functional groups was performed to improve the energy dissipation capability of the fluid. The test results indicated that the chain length of the grafted organic groups had a critical effect on the energy dissipation property. Furthermore, an optimum chain length of the grafted organic groups, the length of the Dodeca-fluoroheptyl-propyl-trimethoxysilane, was obtained to make the specific pore-diameter MWCNTs-based nanofluid achieve the maximum infiltration pressure and energy dissipation capability. Additionally, more liquid came out of the long-chain treated MWCNTs after a loading-unloading process.
