Abstract

China is rich in energy resources and ranks third in the world in total geological energy reserves. However, it is an energy-poor country as far as per capita reserves are concerned, with only half of the world average. With regard to primary energy reserves, China is rich in coal, but poor in oil. The average global ratio of recoverable reserves of coal to those of oil and natural gas is approximately 4 to 1, but this ratio is much larger in China, which means that low-quality energy predominates here. This review presents statistics on China's energy production, energy consumption, and distribution of energy sources. China's energy consumption is characterized by dominance of industry in energy consumption, dominance of coal, high energy consumption and low energy efficiency of electrical appliances, large proportion of noncommercial energy, and low per capita energy consumption. The chapter analyzed the possibilities of energy conservation in China, and discusses energy conservation measures.
