Abstract

The paper establishes an energy-balance theorem valid for the field diffracted in nonlinear optics by a periodically or randomly modulated surface. In the case of a periodic surface (grating) the explicit form of this criterion is derived for the two classical TE and TM polarizations. It is then used to check the numerical results obtained with the computer codes based on a new electromagnetic theory of diffraction in nonlinear optics recently published. Numerical examples are given for loss-less and lossy dielectric gratings.
