Abstract

Data are presented on energy consumption in rural India for agricultural and other uses. The changing pattern of energy use for irrigation and draft power during the period 1951-72, as well as plans for the next five years, are discussed. Because of the trend towards increasing use of mechanical power, various studies comparing bullocks and tractors are reviewed. These studies do not indicate a clear advantage for tractors, whether in cost, contribution to employment, or yields. Either bullocks or diesel engines may be more economical for lifting irrigation water, depending on specific conditions.
