Abstract

1. Detailed study has been made of the adsorption isotherms and differential heats of adsorption for the adsorption of benzene on microporous and nonporous carbon adsorbents of the same chemical type. 2. The heat of adsorption on microporous adsorbents is considerably higher than the heat of adsorption on a nonporous adsorbent of the same chemical type, this difference amounting to ∼4 kcal/mole over essentially the entire range of surface coverage in the case of benzene — carbon adsorbent systems. 3. Heats of adsorption determined calorimetrically at 25°C were combined with the 100°C adsorption isotherm through an isosteric equation, and a 25°C isotherm for benzene adsorption on AS charcoal over a wide range of values of surface coverage and relative pressures (curves covering a seven-order variation in p/ps were, for the first time, obtained for benzene at 25°C) developed and used to evaluate the thermodynamic functions of the systems in question.
