Abstract
The determination of the shear strength of soft soils by the vane shear test is analysed within the framework of the yield design theory. A bounding of the theoretical extreme moment is given. When the vane is sufficiently elongated, this bounding justifies the classical interpretation of the vane shear test without any hypothesis on the real failure mode.
